Before the start of trading: DAX should stabilize

Market report

As of: 25.11.2021 8:13 a.m.

Experts expect the German benchmark index to start the trading day with a premium. Because of the US holiday Thanksgiving, investors will have to act without Wall Street orientation.

Banks and brokers are assuming that the DAX will gain around half a percent in early trading and will thus be quoted just below the 16,000 point mark. Most recently, the DAX had lost up to 3.4 percent to 15,740 points in five trading days.

Yesterday the DAX lost 0.4 percent to 15,878.39 points. Another gloomy mood in the German economy and the corona and inflation worries had temporarily pushed it below the 15,800 mark. “People are waiting to see what impact the new coronavirus restrictions will have on growth in the fourth quarter and in the coming year,” said Nick Nelson, chief investment strategist for Europe at UBS.

Market analyst Michael Hewson from CMC Markets UK would not be surprised if the DAX weakened again today. The focus is on how the new government will deal with the fourth wave of pandemics and the resulting emergency in the health system, according to Hewson.

Dow Jones is on the spot

The guidelines from the USA are relatively weak, as the gloomy outlook from US retailers is troubling Wall Street. “The problem is, everyone is expecting a very strong and robust Christmas shopping season,” said analyst Ken Mahoney, chief executive officer of Mahoney. “Anything that falls behind will be a disappointment.”

From the point of view of the share owners, the trading day was also rather disappointing: the Dow Jones closed barely changed at 35,804 points. The technology-heavy Nasdaq advanced 0.4 percent to 15,845 points. The broad S&P 500 gained 0.2 percent to 4701 points.

The US stock exchanges will be closed today due to the Thanksgiving holiday. That could mean that trade in Europe is also going rather calmly, as there is no orientation from the USA.

In Japan, the Nikkei is 0.8 percent higher at 29,529 points. The broader Topix index rose 0.4 percent and is now trading at 2026 points. The stock exchange in Shanghai, however, was 0.1 percent in the red. The index of the most important companies in Shanghai and Shenzen lost 0.3 percent.

Daimler boss Källenius praises traffic light plans

Daimler CEO Ola Källenius has welcomed plans by the future Berlin traffic light coalition on electromobility. “The first time I scanned the coalition agreement, I liked three numbers: 15 million electric cars, 1 million charging points and 80 percent renewable energies,” said Källenius. These are concrete goals for the year 2030. These would support the change in the automotive industry.

The traffic light parties had previously announced, among other things, that they wanted to accelerate the expansion of the charging infrastructure for electric cars. The focus should be placed on fast charging infrastructure, according to the coalition agreement presented by the SPD, Greens and FDP.

Car market overcomes semiconductor dent only slowly

According to an expert, car manufacturers can only slowly overcome the drop in sales caused by the semiconductor shortage. On the German market, Ferdinand Dudenhöffer from the private Center Automotive Research (CAR) expects sales of less than 2.7 million vehicles in the current year, which would be a decrease of eight percent compared to the weak year 2020.

Strong double-digit growth can only be expected in the second half of the coming year, once the semiconductor crisis and possible upheavals of the fourth Covid-19 wave have been overcome. Dudenhöffer expects growth of 10 percent to 3.01 million units for the full year 2022.

Swiss Life wants to pay more

The Swiss life insurer Swiss Life has set itself more ambitious goals for the period 2022 to 2024 and wants its owners to participate more in the profits. In the next three years, more than 60 percent of net profit will be paid out as dividends, as the group announced. So far, a payout ratio of 50 to 60 percent has been targeted. In addition, one billion francs is to flow to the shareholders through the repurchase of own shares.
