With “Spider-Man: No Way Home” he made it clear why the Oscars became a farce in Kevin Smith’s eyes.
Grossing over $1.7 billion worldwide, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is by far the most successful film to hit the big screen during the coronavirus pandemic. However, the Marvel blockbuster is not among the ten nominated works for the “Best Picture”, it is only nominated for a golden boy for the special effects.
A circumstance that upsets director Kevin Smith (51, “Dogma”). For the self-confessed comic fan, this non-consideration (snub in modern German) of the Academy Awards is an example of why the viewers are running away from the prestigious awards. “What the hell?” Smith wonders in his “FatMan Beyond” podcast. “You’ve got ten spots and can’t you give one of them to the biggest damn movie in three years?”
“Make a popular choice”
At the same time, the minds behind the Oscars would wonder why viewership has dwindled year after year, Smith continues. The solution is simple: “Make a popular choice. […] Show Peter Parker some love.” In Smith’s opinion, it deserved it more than many other films in the running for the Oscar for Best Picture.
Of the ten nominated strips, two have emerged as the big favorites for the award: On the one hand, the Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” with Benedict Cumberbatch (45), who was also able to bring in the most with twelve nominations. And on the other hand, the semi-autobiographical drama “Belfast” by Kenneth Branagh (61). The 94th edition of the Oscars will take place on March 27, 2022.
