Cold air in winter dries out the skin quickly, and thin skin areas such as the lips are particularly affected. They can quickly become brittle and cracked due to the low humidity. The dry heated air indoors amplifies the whole thing even more. These tips will help.

Avoid dry lips

Frequently exposing your skin to the sun dries it out. This also applies to the lips. Anyone who has spent a lot of time in the sun in the summer months often pays for it with dry lips in the cold months. Especially in summer it is important to protect your lips with sun protection. Lip balms containing wax can offer protection from the cold. Water-based care products should be avoided at very low temperatures.

But lips do not only need the right care on the outside. It is just as important to drink enough liquid and enough vitamins. Because nutrient deficiency quickly becomes visible on the skin. So: Drink at least two liters of water a day and pay particular attention to the intake of vitamin B2, zinc and iron.

This is how you care for chapped lips

If the lips are still dry, they need a lot of care. Because the thin skin has neither sebum nor sweat glands and can therefore only regenerate itself with difficulty. Under no circumstances should you ignore dry lips. The problem usually doesn’t go away on its own and only gets worse. Nourishing ingredients such as vegetable oils are needed for care. Natural waxes and oils such as castor oil, beeswax or shea butter offer protection and care in one. Many lip care products contain high levels of mineral oils – these should be avoided.

If you want a quick fix, you can use some home remedies. For example honey: The bee product is a blessing for chapped lips and promotes healing of the skin. Simply apply to the lips like a mask and leave on for about 15 minutes, then wash off.

Regular lip scrubs can also help with chapped lips. These are easy to make at home with two ingredients: something abrasive, like sugar or coffee grounds, mixed with a binding compound like olive oil or honey. Gently rub the peeling over the lips and rinse off. Then apply a care product.

Don’t lick! Saliva dries out the lips

Those who have dry lips often get the urge to lick their lips and moisten them with saliva. However, this is counterproductive: saliva removes the skin’s natural oils and makes it even drier.
