beaten in New Caledonia, Secretary of State Sonia Backès denounces a “betrayal”

Beaten, Sonia Backès denounces a “betrayal for the non-independence camp”

Arriving third in the first round, during which the dissident candidate Georges Naturel (Les Républicains) was elected, Sonia Backès (Renaissance) was beaten in the second by an independence candidate, Robert Xowie. The Secretary of State denounced a ” treason “ in a statement published on his Facebook profile cited by Agence France-Presse, affirming that Mr. Naturel had been elected “thanks to the contribution of 233 independence votes” and that the latter’s support was then carried “on the independence candidate to have him elected in the second round”.

“We will discover in the coming weeks the price of betrayal for the non-independence camp. In the meantime, our fight for the modification of the Constitution and the unfreezing of the electorate must continue more than ever wherever it can be carried out! »she reacts.

The left, for its part, joked about the defeat of the candidate, the only member of the government in the running. “We wonder (sometimes…) about the de facto alliance between LR and Renaissance. Nothing beats a ballot to get the answer: Sonia Backès had both logos on her ballot. And that was not enough for the minister, beaten in New Caledonia by the FLNKS [Front de libération nationale kanak et socialiste] », quipped socialist deputy Jérôme Guedj.

In the same vein, Manuel Bompard, coordinator of La France insoumise, welcomed the election of New Caledonian separatist Robert Xowie.
