The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll honors Cannes: At this year’s edition of the film festival, the biopic “Elvis” is to celebrate its world premiere.

At the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, a biopic will celebrate its world premiere that the music world is also eagerly awaiting. When the important festival takes place on the Côte d’Azur this year from May 17th to 28th, the guests will be granted the first glimpse of Baz Luhrmann’s (59) “Elvis”. This is reported by the US site “Variety”.

The drama follows how a nondescript young musician from Tupelo, Mississippi, became the king of rock ‘n’ roll. The phenomenon that, with his music and, last but not least, his swinging hips, caused both fans to cheer and moral guardians to controversy. Elvis Presley (1935-1977) is portrayed in the film by Austin Butler (30), known among other things for his roles in “The Carrie Diaries” or most recently in Quentin Tarantino’s (58) “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood”.

Almost ten years break from director Baz Luhrmann

In addition to Butler, superstar Tom Hanks (65) can also be seen in “Elvis”. He embodies music manager Tom Parker (1909-1997), Elvis’ notorious discoverer. For director Luhrmann, it is the first feature film since his remake of “The Great Gatsby” from 2013 with Leonardo DiCaprio (47) in the title role.

About a month after its world premiere, “Elvis” will also be shown regularly in cinemas. The German launch date is June 23, 2022.

Another world premiere is coming up

Just a day earlier, “Variety” had also reportedthat Tom Cruise (59) will celebrate the world premiere of his action hit “Top Gun: Maverick” in Cannes. The sequel to the 80s classic has been in the works for what feels like an eternity, Corona and other obstacles had caused various start dates to fall through. Now May 26th is supposed to fix it for Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
