Bayern Munich – Union Berlin 4:0: Bayern beats Union with merciless efficiency

Status: 03/19/2022 8:20 p.m

Union Berlin also had excellent scoring chances – but Bayern’s merciless efficiency was the decisive difference: the duel was already decided at the break.

With the 4:0 (3:0) Bayern put Borussia Dortmund under pressure again, the pursuer has to play on Sunday evening (03/20/22, in the live center at sportschau.de) at 1. FC Köln. But if Munich continue like this Saturday, the championship will no longer be exciting anyway.

Luthe makes a serious mistake

The first half already showed clearly where the decisive differences to the competition lie. The Irons certainly lived up to coach Urs Fischer’s requirement to stress, keep the opponent busy and annoy them again and again. But the fun stopped with Manuel Neuer.

And the game was also decided in this position. When Kingsley Coman scrambled, Andreas Luthe used the wrong hand to try to save in the Union goal, but slipped past the ball and let the hosts’ shot to make it 1-0 (16′).

Neuer excelled against Bone

The equalizer should have been five minutes later. After some great work from Genki Haraguchi, Robin Knoche took advantage of a mistake made by Dayot Upamecano, but Neuer deflected the shot brilliantly around the post from close range.

Seconds later, Taiwo Awoniyi also had the 1:1 on his feet, but his direct acceptance after a cross from Sheraldo Becker missed the far corner by centimeters. Merciless: Union had the chance, Bayern scored: Nianzou Kouassi, who had moved up, took advantage of a header chance to make it 2-0 in the 25th minute – again Luthe didn’t look the best.

Lewandowski makes the 30 full

And the otherwise reliable Union goalkeeper was also involved in the third goal. When running out against Robert Lewandowski after a sloppy header return from Paul Jaeckel, he came a step too late, rammed the Pole in the penalty area – who used the penalty to make it 3-0 and scored his 30th goal of the season (45th).

Should Union have dealt with the dilemma during the break, either to go all out again or to limit the damage, the answer was clear after a minute: neither. After a cross from Jamal Musiala, Lewandowski pushed the ball over the line to make it 4-0.

Clear penalty denied

The 50th minute also proved that this should no longer be the day of the iron. After a clear foul in the penalty area by Nianzou Kouassi, who didn’t catch the ball but only Knoche’s shin, neither referee Harm Osmers nor video assistant Pascal Müller felt compelled to award the penalty – unbelievable.

After that, Bayern took two courses out and Union was no longer so open – the game splashed more leisurely towards the end. After the international break, Union now has to deal with Friday night’s game against 1. FC Köln (01.04.22), Bayern play SC Freiburg a day later.
