FC Bayern Munich has officially confirmed the dismissal of coach Julian Nagelsmann – and also announced his successor.

FC Bayern Munich has now officially confirmed the release of coach Julian Nagelsmann and announced Thomas Tuchel as his successor. “After the World Cup, we played less and less successfully and attractively, the strong fluctuations in performance called our goals into question this season, but also beyond this season. That’s why we have reacted now,” said CEO Oliver Kahn, explaining the hammer in a club statement on Friday.

Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic came to the personnel decision in coordination with President Herbert Hainer, it was said. Tuchel received a contract on the Isar until June 30, 2025 and will lead training on Säbener Straße for the first time on Monday. The 49-year-old will prepare Munich for the classic game against Dortmund after the international break.

Separation from Julian Nagelsmann surprised

Even though the German soccer record champion slipped to second place in the Bundesliga after the 2-1 draw in Leverkusen, the timing of Nagelsmann’s separation surprised many. After all, the Munich team has marched confidently into the quarter-finals in the Champions League with their coach, who was hired in 2021, and the star ensemble is also in the top eight in the DFB Cup. The title triple is possible.

According to reports, the Bayern bosses did not see any sustainable development despite a top squad. They saw the goals of the season as endangered and prematurely ended the planned long-term project with Nagelsmann, who actually still had a contract until June 30, 2026. With the 35-year-old, the assistant coaches Dino Toppmöller, Benjamin Glück and Xaver Zembrod will also be released.

Thomas Tuchel takes over FC Bayern Munich

“It was the most difficult decision in my time as a sporting director at FC Bayern. I have had an open, trusting, friendly relationship with Julian from day one. I regret the separation from Julian,” said Salihamidzic.

Tuchel had to leave Chelsea this season, with whom he won the Champions League in 2021. In 2018, the native of Krumbach was already a hot candidate for a coaching position at Bayern. But Munich hesitated too long for Tuchel. He went to Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern finally hired Niko Kovac.
