Bayer Leverkusen – Union Berlin 2: 2: Exciting game – without a winner

Status: 08.01.2022 6:14 p.m.

Bayer Leverkusen led its December crisis into January: In the home stadium, the team did not get beyond a draw against Union Berlin in a 2-2 (1-1) draw.

Leverkusen took the lead through Patrick Schick (38th). Grischa Prömel meanwhile turned the game with two hits (45th, 49th), before Jonathan Tah equalized to 2-2 (83rd).

In ugly rainy weather in Leverkusen, both teams started bumpy and with many bad passes. Bayer caught up a little earlier in front of empty stands and took the initiative mainly thanks to the thirsty Moussa Diaby. First, after Diaby’s preliminary work (10th minute), Schick failed against Union keeper Andreas Luthe, which then also happened to Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah.

In the 38th minute, however, the long overdue lead for Leverkusen: After a one-two with Wirtz, Diaby failed to Luthe, but goal scorer Schick nailed the rebound from an acute angle to make it 1-0 into the net. The spell was broken and Union lurched in the face of Bayer’s offensive power – one had thought.

But as if out of nowhere, Berlin managed to equalize in the 45th minute: An initially cleared corner landed with Christopher Trimmel, who initially failed to keeper Lukas Hradecky with a powerful left-footed shot from 20 meters. Grischa Prömel then pushed the double rebound over the line to make it 1: 1.

Prömel for the second, Tah equalizes: 2: 2

But that wasn’t enough for the unlucky Leverkusen: three minutes after the restart it was 1: 2: Trimmel had flanked from the right, at the far post Max Kruse played for Prömel, who scored his second goal from close range. Only in the final phase was the advanced central defender Tah headed to make it 2-2 (83rd).

Bayer will play against Borussia Mönchengladbach on the coming match day. The kick-off is on Saturday (January 15th, 2022) at 6.30 p.m. Union Berlin receives TSG Hoffenheim from 3:30 p.m. on the same day.
