Not only the car industry is currently gradually switching to electromobility. More than ever, the transport industry is trying to jump on the electric trend. The best example is the Bax truck, which has now celebrated its surprising premiere.

At least the premiere location in Wiehl had already been chosen appropriately. The new electric truck from Bax was presented to the general public for the first time at the annual general meeting of the Federal Association for eMobility. The 7.5-tonne truck with electric drive was developed by BPW together with Paul Nutzfahrzeuge and construction companies who brought various freight forwarders on board for the development. In addition to the drive technology, BPW also developed the networking and system integration of the vehicle, Paul takes on the mechanical integration of all drive components as well as the homologation for the European market. Both companies have been cooperating for years in converting trucks from diesel to electric drives. The market launch for the electric truck should be in the middle of next year. With a chassis weight of 3.5 tons, the BAX 7.5 has a payload of four tons. With the factory box body including the Palfinger loading bridge, there are still three tonnes of payload or 15 Euro pallets left for everyday transport.

“The BAX impressively demonstrates the innovative strength of the medium-sized German commercial vehicle industry. Renowned family businesses have come together here and, together with freight forwarders, drivers and system partners from the supplier industry, have put together a truck that impresses with its performance and uncompromising practical orientation,” says Kurt Sigl, President of the Federal Association of eMobility, “BPW and Paul Nutzfahrzeuge differ pleasantly from some large corporations, from which a lot of fuss has been seen so far, but few vehicles ready for series production.” The 100 kW / 136 PS strong BAX 7.5 is available with two different wheelbases, 3.47 and 4.48 meters, and can be customized without restrictions with the same superstructures as comparable diesel models.

With the large set of batteries (126 kWh), the BAX drives 200 kilometers, while the small battery pack (84 kWh) only lasts 130 kilometers before it goes to the next charging station. The battery pack comes from the premium manufacturer BMW. The BAX can be charged with either 22 or 100 kilowatts. With a 100 kW fast charger, the BAX refills from 20 to 80 percent in just under 40 minutes. The drive technology of the e-truck is located in the rear axle. The drive axle from BPW uses two electric motors to balance a torque of 3,290 Newton meters each on the wheels and the maximum axle load is 5.6 tonnes. Among other things, lane departure warning systems, emergency braking and turning warnings and a reversing camera ensure safety. The driver is even more pleased with comfort details such as air conditioning, seat heating, hands-free equipment, Apple Carplay or Android Auto.

The BAX 7.5 is equipped with a transport telematics system as standard and offers a special extra: the driver, but also the fleet manager or dispatcher at the headquarters can not only view all vehicle, battery and tour data online in real time, but also the payload. In this way, tours can also be optimized spontaneously. Telematics help the driver to drive safely and efficiently. “We are pleased to be able to demonstrate the power of our axle drive for the first time in a new vehicle,” explains Josha Felix Kneiber, Head of Product Management & Strategic Sales Electromobility, “the BAX is not a capricious show car, but a real workhorse for everyday transport. The standard telematics also ensures more added value per kilometer. “
