Bavarian Constitutional Order for Uschi Glas, Markus Wasmeier, Charlotte Knobloch – Bavaria

The President of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, Charlotte Knobloch, the actress Uschi Glas and ski legend Markus Wasmeier, together with other personalities, received the Bavarian Constitutional Order 2023. State Parliament President Ilse Aigner (CSU) presented the award to around 50 people on Thursday in the Senate Hall of the Maximilianeum.

Among those honored are the director of the Academy for Political Education in Tutzing, Ursula Münch, the director Caroline Link and Franz Langstein, board member of the association “For Remembering – Mühldorfer Hart Concentration Camp Memorial”.

However, citizens who are less in the public eye and who have made outstanding contributions in various areas were also honored. It was about the rehabilitation of prisoners, disaster control, youth welfare, women’s rights and a “real-life proclamation of the Gospel”, for which the Catholic priest Rainer Maria Schießler was honored.

The awarding of the order is always about “the constitution of our country,” said Aigner according to the text of the speech. “And some developments make me very thoughtful.” Political culture needs a return to what is really important. The common good should be the focus. But she doesn’t see a division in society. The majority of society is large, “with a good sense of proportion.” Aigner also warned the media not to focus too much on the conflict, but to identify shades of gray and see the whole picture. Overall, she increasingly misses a discussion on the matter.

In view of the wars and crises in the world, many asked themselves what they could do, Aigner continued. Individuals could not reverse global trends – but could still achieve a lot as individuals or together with others. This was demonstrated by those awarded the medal. “They give you the courage to work hard and achieve something.”

In his speech, according to the manuscript, CSU politician Theo Waigel warned of a rise in populist, nationalist movements in Germany too. This should be contrasted with the principles and basic values ​​of the constitution and democracy.

The award was founded as the Bavarian Constitutional Medal on December 1, 1961 by the then President of the State Parliament, Rudolf Hanauer. Since 2021, the recognition for citizens who are outstandingly committed to the common good has been awarded in one class as the Bavarian Constitutional Order.
