In Bavaria, a man worked in a water-filled gully shaft. When two colleagues received no more signs of life from him, they followed him. Rescue workers could only save all three dead.

In an accident at work in a waste disposal company in Upper Bavaria, three men drowned in a sewer system. One of the three workers worked on Tuesday in Weyarn (Miesbach district) in a water-filled gully shaft, said the police. When his colleagues could no longer contact him, the two men climbed into the shaft to help. After that, the trio sent no more signs of life.

As a result, several volunteer fire brigades from the area, the rescue service, a rescue helicopter, the water rescue service and several police patrols went to the company, the police said. Divers searched for the three missing people, but were initially unable to find them because of the high water level in the canal system.

Only after firefighters had lowered the water level in the sewer system were the three men, aged 20, 27 and 28, found dead. The Kripo Miesbach and the public prosecutor’s office in Munich II determined the cause of the accident on Tuesday. A police spokesman was initially unable to say on Tuesday why the men were working on the gully shaft.

The relatives of the three men, who, according to the police, all come from communities in the region, were notified while the operation was still ongoing. They were looked after by a crisis intervention team and trained staff from the Oberbayern Süd police headquarters.
