When the Munich-Bogenhausen Clinic received a call from the market town of Pförring sometime in 2011, Andreas Nerlich, the chief physician in pathology, had no idea that the consequences of this phone call would occupy him for a whole decade. The district of Pförring (district of Eichstätt) includes Wackerstein Castle, which was owned by the Jordan family for a while in the 19th century. The caller said on the phone that there was a Napoleonic crypt chapel near the castle that was in a state of disrepair and contained five mummies. Now he wants to know what will happen to them during the renovation.
