Bavaria: Stone thrown at top Green duo – 45-year-old accused – Bavaria

After the attack on the top Bavarian Green Party duo Katharina Schulze and Ludwig Hartmann during the 2023 state election campaign, the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office has charged a suspect. On September 17th in Neu-Ulm, the 45-year-old is said to have thrown a stone towards the stage on which Schulze and Hartmann were performing.

The two members of the state parliament were not hit and were uninjured. Party leader Schulze later described the situation as her “worst moment” during the election campaign.

The suspected stone thrower was charged with attempted grievous bodily harm and also with acts of resistance against law enforcement officers, reported Senior Public Prosecutor Sebastian Murer from the Public Prosecutor General’s Office. The charges must now be examined by the district court in Neu-Ulm. District court director Thomas Kirschner explained that a decision had not yet been made regarding the opening of the main proceedings. A trial date is probably not expected before the summer.

The then 44-year-old suspect was arrested by the police officers present on site immediately after the throw, which the man is said to have defended himself against. According to investigators, he later basically admitted the crime. His motive was to be dissatisfied with the political situation. He didn’t mean to hurt anyone by throwing the stone.
