CSU boss Markus Söder wants to introduce a new general secretary this Friday. At 10.30 a.m., Söder summoned the party executive committee to a meeting at short notice – the only item on the agenda was the presentation of the new Secretary General, it said.
At 11:00 a.m., the public will be informed at a press conference. The previous CSU General Secretary Stephan Mayer surprisingly resigned on Tuesday evening. It was initially unclear who would succeed him. Numerous names of potential candidates for the important post were again circulating in the CSU on Thursday – in addition to various members of the Bundestag such as Daniela Ludwig and Thomas Silberhorn or that of Bavaria’s Minister of Agriculture Michaela Kaniber.
Should Söder choose Kaniber, this would in turn result in a replacement in the cabinet. If he sticks to the previous regional proportional representation, the ministerial post would have to be filled by an Upper Bavarian. After a little more than two months in office, the previous CSU General Secretary Stephan Mayer announced his resignation. The 48-year-old named health reasons in a written statement.
At the same time, however, he admitted that, in retrospect, a “possibly” inappropriate choice of words was given to a “Bunte” journalist. The journalist had previously accused Mayer of threatening him over the phone in connection with a report on Mayer’s private life. Söder announced on Wednesday that he would quickly clarify the successor.
