Bavaria: number of bathing deaths rises to 54 – Bavaria

In Bavaria, more people died in swimming accidents by the end of the summer than in the same period last year. The number of fatal swimming accidents in Bavaria by the end of August had risen from 49 to 54, said the regional association of the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz on Wednesday. This means that the most fatalities in swimming accidents nationwide were reported in Bavaria during this period.

A spokesman for the DLRG state association said that more people died while swimming in Bavaria than in the same period last year. Stand-up paddling also plays a role in the statistics: at least four people died in Bavaria when they were on the boards without a life jacket. Especially on hot days, many stand-up paddlers underestimated how much the body warms up on a tour. If you fall into cold water, your circulation could collapse – and in the worst case, the paddlers could drown. The DLRG therefore advises wearing life jackets and avoiding traveling alone if possible.
