Houses evacuated, landslides, flooded streets, full cellars – in Upper Bavaria the fire brigade has been in constant use since Saturday evening after heavy rain. The situation is dramatic, said a spokesman for the integrated control center in Traunstein.

The places Berchtesgaden and Bischofswiesen in the extreme southeast of Bavaria are particularly affected. There the water shoots out of the mountains, at the same time the water levels of the river Ache rose. Individual houses have already been cleared due to slipping slopes. The district is coordinating the operation with immediate effect and has declared a disaster. The people in the places were called to no longer enter their cellars.

“There are always emergency calls coming in,” said a police spokesman in Rosenheim. In the district of Berchtesgadener Land, all fire departments are required. “The situation is confusing,” said the spokesman. “It’s raining heavily.” Federal roads have been flooded or blocked because of mudslides.

The Danube, Isar, Salzach and Inn are also threatened with flooding, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). The city of Passau warned of flooding on its website on Friday: basements and properties could be flooded on Sunday.

From Saturday to Monday night, according to the DWD forecast, it will rain and thunderstorms almost without interruption on the eastern edge of the Alps. The service warns for the Alps, with the exception of the Allgäu Alps, of storm-like heavy rain with up to 25 liters per square meter in a short time. In some places it could rain even more. In addition, there could be gusts of wind and small-grain hail.

The DWD expects rainfall of up to 100 liters per square meter, especially near the Berchtesgaden Alps, until Sunday evening. Up to 160 liters per square meter are possible in stowage locations.
