There is a special session in the Bavarian state parliament today on the affair surrounding an anti-Semitic leaflet. According to the Greens and the SPD, Aiwanger’s handling of the affair makes him intolerable for his office.

Greens and At the special session in the Bavarian state parliament on the leaflet affair, the SPD failed with their request to dismiss Deputy Prime Minister Hubert Aiwanger. On Thursday, 19 MPs voted in favor of the application in the interim committee, 32 voted against it, as the chairman of the committee, Thomas Kreuzer, announced. So there were no abstentions.

The CSU and Free Voters had also previously rejected applications from the Greens, the SPD and the FDP to question Prime Minister Markus Söder and his deputy Aiwanger with their majority in the committee.

The Greens and the SPD had justified the request for Aiwanger’s dismissal by saying that his explanations regarding the allegations surrounding an anti-Semitic leaflet from his school days were “completely inadequate”. His handling of the affair makes him intolerable for his office, and Aiwanger damages Bavaria’s reputation in the world.

The interim committee in Bavaria is responsible for discussing urgent matters in the period shortly before state elections; it currently has 51 members.
