The European Athletics Championships in Munich were interrupted on the evening of the final by long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo. The reason was a severe weather warning on Thursday evening. The spectators tried to escape the rain and, at the request of the organizers, should stay in the covered area of the Olympic Stadium.
From a German point of view, the highlight of the evening should be the decision with Mihambo. A few weeks after successfully defending her world championship title, she wants to repeat the 2018 European Championship victory in Munich.
Due to heavy rain – flood warnings in southern Bavaria
In many districts in southern Bavaria, warnings of flooding are being issued on Friday and Saturday in view of the high levels of precipitation expected. Rivers such as the Loisach, Ammer and Isar could sometimes reach flood notification level 1, as reported by the responsible water management authorities. That could mean “smaller proliferations in places”.
Reporting level 2 is also possible on the Isar in the Munich area, so agricultural and forestry areas could be flooded – there could also be slight traffic obstructions on main roads and municipal roads.
The German Weather Service (DWD) expects longer-lasting precipitation for Friday in the south of Bavaria and in the Upper Palatinate and, especially near the Alps, heavy rain in some cases. The DWD issued an “official storm warning of extremely heavy continuous rain” for the districts of Lindau (Lake Constance), Oberallgäu, Ostallgäu, Weilheim-Schongau, Garmisch-Patenkirchen, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Miesbach, Traunstein, district and city of Rosenheim. Extremely heavy continuous rain occurs there with precipitation amounts between 80 and 140 liters per square meter.
In the cities and districts further north of the edge of the Alps up to the Upper Palatinate, precipitation amounts of 50 to 80 liters per square meter are expected.
Also on Saturday, showers and thunderstorms are expected from the north-west, especially in the afternoon. The DWD publishes current information on its website.
