Bavaria: Doctorate at the university instead of at the university – Bavaria

“The universities,” says Walter Schober, “worked intensively in the first few months of the year to write applications.” The Technical University (TH) Ingolstadt, which Schober heads, has also written an application, a “very comprehensive package”: with appendices a good 500 pages long, full of research projects and publication lists. Lots of paperwork, but it might be worth it. Because if the application is approved, you could not only study in Ingolstadt in the future, but also do a doctorate in selected subjects – thanks to a change in the law that allows TH and universities of applied sciences (HaW) to carry out doctorates independently. “It will certainly be a big and noticeable change,” says Schober, who also heads the Bavarian University Association. But: “We also need the right to award doctorates in order to grow in the research area.”
