The CSU is looking with concern at the weak survey results two weeks before the state elections in Bavaria. A party conference should provide the impetus for a strong final spurt.

It is two weeks before the Bavarian state elections CSU met for a party conference in Munich. CSU boss Markus Söder wants to encourage the Christian Socialists there to make the decisive final push. In surveys, the party had recently fallen to up to 36 percent, which was still below its historically poor state election results from 2018 (37.2 percent). Prime Minister Söder, who wants to continue the coalition with the Free Voters, must therefore do everything in his power to increase the vote by a few percentage points in the last few meters.

In addition to Söder’s campaign speech, the new election of the entire party executive committee is scheduled to take place, including Söder. Two years ago he was confirmed in office with 87.6 percent. No personnel changes are foreseeable among the deputies. CDU leader Friedrich Merz is also expected to be a guest speaker in Munich in the early afternoon.
