Bavaria: Cities like a sponge – Bavaria

Heat waves and droughts, then extreme precipitation again: climate change is a major challenge, especially for cities. The EcoQuartier in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm is an example of how municipalities can cope better with this.

Last weekend, large parts of Bavaria were hit by storms, heavy and continuous rain. So also the town of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm. With around 90 liters per square meter in 20 minutes, streets would have turned into raging streams, reports Mayor Thomas Herker (SPD). There would have been around 200 missions in total. There was only one part of the city where the fire brigade did not have to go: the EcoQuartier. This quarter is built with high sustainability standards and according to the principles of the “sponge city”.
