Bavaria: Brown bear detected in the Berchtesgadener Land – Bavaria

It is the second bear sighting in a few days: on Monday, a bear was recorded by a wildlife camera in the western district of Berchtesgadener Land. This was announced by the State Office for the Environment (LfU) on Tuesday evening. According to a spokesman, it is unclear whether it is the same animal that was photographed on Sunday in the Traunstein district. According to the LfU, individualization based on a photo or paw prints is not possible. Authorities, interest groups and representatives of livestock farmers have already been informed about the sighting.

The state office recommends that farmers in the area bring their animals in at night and protect their herds. The local population and those seeking relaxation are asked to observe the rules of conduct when dealing with wild animals and to be attentive and careful when engaging in outdoor activities.

As early as mid-April, paw prints from a bear were discovered in the snow in the mountains in the Miesbach district, which is a few kilometers as the crow flies west of the Traunstein mountains. Then three torn sheep were found in the Upper Bavarian district of Rosenheim. All places are near the border to Tyrol, where two bears have settled for some time. One is in the Lech Valley, the second has been repeatedly detected in the mountains near Kufstein.

It is officially unclear whether the cracks and other traces on the Bavarian side come from this bear. The gene traces that the animal left behind when it attacked the sheep are still being evaluated.
