Bavaria: Authority is still for wolf shooting – Bavaria

A wolf killed animals in several counties in December. The government of Upper Bavaria had therefore released it for shooting – but a court contradicted it. The authority is now examining whether to take action against the decision.

After the court stopped the shooting license for the wolf in the Chiemgau area, the government of Upper Bavaria is examining appeals. The authority still considers the removal of the wolf – according to official German – to be necessary, a spokesman said on Monday. She will examine the reasons for the decision of the Munich Administrative Court as the lower instance and decide very quickly whether an appeal will be lodged with the Bavarian Administrative Court.

On Monday a week ago, the government of Upper Bavaria issued a general decree allowing the male wolf with the gene code GW2425m to be shot down in order to prevent people from being endangered. On the other hand, the Bund Naturschutz (BN) and the Society for the Protection of Wolves (GzSdW) had submitted urgent applications to the Munich Administrative Court. The court concluded Friday that the shooting would likely be unlawful. There was no danger to people or public safety that would require the wolf to be killed immediately. From none of the previously known incidents is apparent that this wolf would have approached people in a way that was not typical of the species. In addition, there has been no information about the whereabouts of the wolf since December 19.

The wolf had killed animals several times near settlements in the districts of Rosenheim, Traunstein and Berchtesgadener Land from December 13 to 19, 2021. Since then there has been no trace of him. Wolves are strictly protected and may only be shot in exceptional cases. The last time a wolf was killed in Bavaria was in the Fichtel Mountains in 1882.
