A woman from Austria died in an accident while hiking in the Bavarian Alps. As the police announced on Tuesday, the 45-year-old fell about 90 meters on Barmstein in the Berchtesgadener Land district. She suffered fatal injuries.
The woman from Hallein, Austria, set off on a mountain tour late Sunday evening, her goal: the summit of the Großer Barmstein. Because her family could not contact her on Monday, her brother went looking for her and found her body at the foot of a rock face.
Exactly how the accident happened is now the subject of police investigations by the Berchtesgaden Police Inspectorate. The Großer Barmstein, a rock tower on the Bavarian-Austrian border, is considered a challenging destination for climbers, but can also be climbed on foot using steps. The Berchtesgaden mountain adventure association writes on its websitethat hikers should be “sure-footed and not afraid of heights” for the ascent and descent on one of the Barmsteine.
