Of course, the Wöhrsee is not a real insider tip, especially not in the wider area of the Upper Bavarian border town of Burghausen in the district of Altötting. In winter, the Wöhrsee sometimes even has a national prominence for a short time, when the ice swimmers dare to go into the cold water there again. But even in summer, the Wöhrsee is a very special and particularly beautiful bathing lake, with the best view from below of the “world’s longest castle”, as Burghausen prides itself on tourism. The Wöhrsee was created many centuries ago as an artificial reservoir in a former branch of the nearby Salzach river, used as a fishing water and defense system for the castle residents. In the meantime, however, it has also been a bathing lake for quite a while – first for the soldiers of the local garrison, then for everyone, whereby the separation of the bathing establishments according to women, men, nuns and monks has been obsolete since 1934/35 at the latest. Admission, currently three euros for an adult, is significantly cheaper than entering the castle, there is a café, wooden cabins with nostalgic charm and all kinds of playing fields. Rowing boats, pedal boats and stand-up boards, for which the Wöhrsee is easily large enough, can also be rented inexpensively. Warm showers pay an extra euro for this, but which other bathing lake has warm showers? They are also good for ice swimmers in winter. Matthias Köpf
