Hardly anyone would have thought it possible, but the national team showed it to everyone: Germany is the basketball world champion – and there are enthusiastic reactions to the final victory on the Internet.

There are also apparently basketball fans in German politics. It remains to be seen whether it has been for a long time or just since the national team surprised everyone with its performance. In any case, Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) commented happily: “What a day for German basketball. You infected everyone with your enthusiasm & wrote sports history,” he tweeted. His colleague from the SPD, Sawsan Chebli, wrote: “What a game. What madness! Thanks guys, great teamwork, thanks Dennis Schröder. So we can be world champions after all.”
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD) has also personally congratulated the players: “That was an incredible achievement, we are all incredibly proud of you!”
And the comedian Oliver Kalkofe also seems to have caught the basketball fever. He tweeted with a wink: “Thank you very much, now I’m hooked! That basketball is really cool!! Can I still get in there if the basket is hung a little lower? Congratulations to the great German team!” Whether he will be part of the team next time – probably not. But like Kalkofe, many Germans are probably feeling the same way: What the players did in Manila really makes many people want to Throwing baskets done!
