Basketball national coach Gordon Herbert has been courted by a top club in France. Now he has decided.

World champion coach Gordon Herbert (64) will not coach the French Euroleague club Asvel Lyon-Villeurbanne. The national coach told the “Kicker” that he “discussed the possibility of coaching Asvel and at the same time remaining the national coach” with the German Basketball Association.

“The DBB did not support the idea. I accept that. I would never do it without the approval and support of the association,” said the Canadian.

Herbert has a contract with the DBB until 2025 and extended it before the World Cup by winning the title for the first time in Manila. The Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 and the European Championships in 2025, which will be held in four countries, are the next goals of the world champions around Dennis Schröder and Franz Wagner.

“I made a three-year commitment”

The German association does not provide for the internationally common dual role of national coach and club coach. “I have made a three-year commitment. If the players have also made such a three-year commitment, I stand by it without any doubt,” said Herbert.

Instead of Herbert, Italian national coach Gianmarco Pozzecco could now take over Villeurbanne. According to Italian media reports, the ex-professional is about to sign a deal with the French. Unlike Herbert, Pozzecco (51) is said to have received permission from the national association to be a club and selection coach in one person and thus remain with the Azzurri. Confirmation from Lyon is expected soon, wrote the “Gazzetta dello Sport”.
