“Basic Law 49” on the Jakob-Kaiser-Haus: “Last generation” daubed the memorial in the government district

Supporters of the climate protest group “Last Generation” defaced the “Basic Law 49” memorial in Berlin-Mitte on Saturday morning.

As the police informed the rbb, the work of art in the immediate vicinity of the Jakob Kaiser house was doused with a liquid. The group itself said the glass sculpture had been “soaked in petroleum.”

The memorial shows the 19 basic rights articles of the German Basic Law in their original version from 1949. These are engraved in the approximately three meter high glass wall. The group said on Twitter that they had shown how the government deals with fundamental rights. “Burning oil or protecting fundamental rights? In 2023 only one of the two is possible,” it said.

According to the police, the personal details of six people who were directly involved in the action were identified. Personal details were also recorded by a camera team from the group that documented the action. According to the information, everyone was given a place reference.

Next, the damage caused to the memorial will be checked, the police said.

With their controversial actions, the “last generation” wants to persuade the federal government to do more for climate protection.
