With the 117th edition of the World Series approaching this month, the Costacos Collection today announced the release of an NFT dedicated to baseball legend Willie Mays.
This collection captures the life and career of Say Hey Kid (Willie Mays’ nickname) from playing in the Negro American League to being named Rookie of the Year with the New York Giants in 1951.
The NFT, which launches on October 24, is also a present for Mays’ 90th birthday.
The Costacos Collection collaborates with athletes and their teams or organizations to create digital art on the blockchain, with the Costacos Collection saying all proceeds will go to the Mays Say Hey Foundation to establish a baseball academy for underprivileged youths in the state. Alabama and restored historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, where Mays played for the Birmingham Black Barons.
“…I will never forget the people who supported me, taught me and helped me achieve my dreams…” Mays said in a press release.
“…I want every child to have the same opportunity as me. And this gives me hope that this is possible. Starting from my hometown…”
One of the NFT’s, called “The Making of a Giant,” features an audio clip of sports broadcaster Bob Costas telling Mays’ story.
and other NFTs in the collection will feature images commemorating Rickwood Field and Mays’ Rookie of the Year award.
The Mays collection of NFTs is another product dedicated to preserving the legacy of historic black artists, musicians and athletes.
As previously reported by Decrypt, Russell Simmons teamed up with Snoop Dogg to launch NFTs dedicated to early hip-hop artists. that laid the foundation for what would become a global phenomenon.
The Willie Mays NFT collection will be available at Nifty Gateway on October 24 at 3:30 PM.
