A work of art from the 19th century makes everyone crazy at “Bares for Rares”. Ultimately, it is the seller who benefits most from this.

Before he enters the “Bares for Rares” studio, Thomas Jans still has doubts as to whether his painting is even worth coming to the dealer’s room. The man from Aachen traveled to the junk show with his friend Karl “Charles” Reinecke to learn more about the work of art.

Horst Lichter’s first reaction to the picture already gives a hint to the question: “Very romantic”, the moderator sighs at the sight of the rural motif, which shows, among other things, two doves, roses and a sunset. Lights almost gets into raptures: “You could spin the entire love story out of it now,” he says to the expert Albert Maier.

He explains that it is a work by the German painter Ferdinand Knab, who was artistically active in the second half of the 19th century and is now traded worldwide. In view of this, the desired price seems quite modest: Jans only wants 400 to 500 euros for the picture. Albert Maier does not agree with this: “A minimum of 1,200 to 1,500 euros,” is his expertise.

During his appraisal in the dealer’s room, Wolfgang Pauritsch praises the incidence of light reflected in the puddle. “It’s fantastically done.” With his starting bid of 500 euros, Pauritsch met the seller’s desired price. Since all five dealers are bidding, the price quickly rises to 1300 euros. Actually, the two gentlemen should be perfectly happy, but then Thomas Jans starts to gamble: “I mean, you could do something better,” says Charles Reinecke when asked if he is satisfied with the bids.

And so it goes on in steps of 100 euros, in the end Sarah Schreiber auctions the romantic painting for 2000 euros. The sellers have thus achieved five times the desired price. “We didn’t expect that at all,” says Jans afterwards. “I’m totally happy.”
