“Are you crazy, or what?”: Horst Lichter speaks a word of power

At the end of the “Bares for Rares” episode, Horst Lichter had to talk the dealers into conscience – not for the first time.

For the second time within a week, Horst Lichter enters the auction room at “Bares für Rares” and gives a lecture. The trigger is a picture from the 1930s.

Last Wednesday, Horst Lichter broke his collar: After an immense bidding war, the moderator of “Bares for Rares” walked into the auction room and talked the dealers into conscience.

Apparently the sermon has not paid off. Because only five days later, Lichter was once again forced to utter a serious word: “Take it easy, dear ones: What’s going on here? Are you crazy, or what?”

The reason for the renewed address is a painting that even Horst Lichter likes: “Orient meets Occident”, says the moderator when he sees it for the first time in the expert room. Monika and Jürgen Dekoeper brought it with them from Berlin. Monika got the picture from her grandfather, who lived in Krakow for a while in the 1930s.

A coveted painting by “Bares for Rares”

It was made by the Polish artist Wojciech Kossak (1857-1942). According to expert Detlev Kümmel, he actually became famous for his monumantal battle scenes. But the present painting belongs to his later work and was created in 1936. It shows a romanticized representation of the Orient.

The couple want 500 euros. But the expert gives them hope for significantly more money: Kümmel estimates the picture at 1500 to 2000 euros.

“Exoticism is always possible”, says Christian Vechtel when examining the picture – and immediately gives the sellers hope of a good deal: “You brought us a bang,” he greets the couple.

The words are followed by deeds: Thorsden Schlößner opens the round of bidders with 3,000 euros – twice the estimated value. In a duel with Susanne Steiger, he drives the price up to 6700 – that’s how much money the dealer from Düren is paying for the painting.

The sellers are of course happy. And while Schlößner is still collecting the compliments of his colleagues (“Great picture, great atmosphere, great”), Horst Lichter is already making his way back to the dealership: “I want to know what they were thinking.”
