Horst Lichter showed little understanding: his studio guest demands 4500 for the photo of a fender. However, the expertise confirms the desired price – but how do the dealers react?

“Art is hip,” exclaims Horst Lichter as he enters the “Bares for Rares” studio. A noble black-and-white photograph is lying on the expert table. But the sight of the motif awakens the connoisseur in him: it’s a photo of a BMW 501, “popularly known as a baroque angel,” as the moderator reports. Rather, the fender of this car built in the 50’s and early 60’s can be seen.

“Bares for Rares”: Horst Lichter is flabbergasted

Frank Ewerhardy brought the picture with him. The truck driver from Bad Breisig found it in a bag during a household clearance and kept it. A wise decision: it comes from the famous photographer Peter Keetman, who died in 2005. From the 1950s, his specialty was pictures of industrial and series production. His most famous work was created in 1953: “A series from the Volkswagen factory”. The photo offered here was taken in 1956, the print dates from 1987.

So far so good. When Ewerhardy names his desired price, Lichter briefly drops his jaw: the 57-year-old wants 4,500 euros for it. “For a photo?” the moderator exclaims indignantly. Expert Colmar Schulte-Goltz, on the other hand, confirms the tendency to be high. He estimates the value at 2700 to 3000 euros. “My God, children, you’re throwing numbers around here,” groans Horst Lichter. “This is a fender from the car that was photographed.”

In the dealer room you share the euphoria. Wolfgang Pauritsch starts with 1000 euros. The price climbs up in 100 euro increments. “There are big fans,” says Julian Schmitz-Avila, who fought a private duel with Pauritsch that only ended at 3150.

Frank Ewerhardy does not quite get his desired price, but it exceeds the estimated value. Then Horst Lichter can say nothing more.
