An almost 500-year-old picture was up for auction at “Bares for Rares”. Moderator Horst Lichter initially thought the age was a joke.

Fabienne Voigt and Alexander Helfen got a small work of art from an attic clearance in the family. But the couple from Konz in Rhineland-Palatinate has no connection to the picture and that’s how they want it in “Cash for Rares” auction.

Colmar Schulte-Goltz explains that the tiny picture is a depiction that comes from the biblical context. You can see Adam and Eve together with the snake. However, it does not hang on the tree of knowledge as usual, but is wrapped around a skeleton. “This makes it particularly clear to turn to making the leap out of paradise at the same time as realizing that you are mortal.”

“Bares for Rares”: The expertise surprises

The year 1543 can be seen in the picture. “But it’s not that old,” Horst Lichter grapples. But the expert contradicts him: “It’s so old!” The moderator is speechless for a moment. The picture was painted by Hans Selbald Beham, one of the most important German graphic artists of the 16th century. Schulte-Goltz explains that the image is an imprint of a copper engraving plate. He thinks the picture is original.

The two sellers would like 400 to 500 euros for the picture. Colmar Schulte-Goltz has a completely different idea: he estimates the value of this “wonderful work” at 2,800 euros. The couple didn’t expect that.

“Oh, an old master graphic,” says Daniel Meyer while examining the piece in the dealer’s room. Wolfgang Pauritsch starts the auction with 300 euros. But Meyer disagrees. The two gentlemen deliver a tough bidding duel, which initially drives the price up to 1500 euros. The two sellers would like a little more, so Daniel Meyer offers 1,650 euros. Although the estimated value has not been reached, the two partners have more than tripled their desired price. They go home happy.
