He who laughs last laughs best: At “Bares for Rares” trader Jos van Katwijk drew ridicule from his colleagues for his bid – but in the end the Dutchman did the business anyway.

Petra and Christian Fruboese believe they can buy a real rarity with “To have brought cash for rares”. Horst Lichter also sees it this way: “The part is beautiful,” says the moderator. “And that’s old.” Detlev Kümmel agrees: “It’s really something special that you don’t get every Day gets.” It is a single-cylinder engine model. More precisely, a double-stroke cylinder, as the expert explains. Kümmel dates its creation to the second half of the 19th century, “somewhere between 1870 and 1890”.

The Fruboese would like 200 to 300 euros for the old machine. Detlev Kümmel corrects that slightly upwards: He rates the property at 300 to 350 euros. The two sellers are satisfied. In particular, wife Petra is looking forward to the sale soon: “I’m quite happy: the thing is going away,” says the woman from Trier. “I’m not that interested in physics.”

“Bares for Rares”: teasing in the dealer room

Leo Leo takes a close look at the object in the dealer’s room, but Julian Schmitz-Avila teases: “You don’t have to look at it so closely, you won’t get it anyway.” “Maybe it won’t be so cheap for you,” counters the Berliner.

The auction got off to a good start: Walter “Waldi” Lehnertz started at 280 euros. With the next bid, the estimated value of 450 euros is clearly exceeded. But it goes even further: with 625 euros, the highest bid comes from Jos van Katwijk. The colleagues are amazed at the crooked sum. “It’s Dutch,” explains the Dutchman. But Leo Leo has a different explanation: “That’s all he has with him.”

In the end it is even 650 euros because the sellers ask for a round sum. Van Katwijk agrees and adds another “lucky dollar” – that’s the end of a literally round afternoon for Petra and Christin Fruboese.
