Ex-BVB striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left Arsenal a year and a half earlier than expected. The Gunners paid a lot for that.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was apparently sweetened the termination of his contract with Arsenal with a high severance payment. the Times writes that the Gabonese received the equivalent of almost 8.5 million euros for the fact that the Londoners canceled the contract, which was valid until 2023, on Tuesday “by mutual consent”. A little later, Aubameyang moved to FC Barcelona on a free transfer.

Although Arsenal had to dig deep into their pockets to terminate the contract, it is a sensible deal for the Gunners in the long term. Aubameyang was earning the equivalent of more than €400,000 a week and keeping the 32-year-old until his working paper expired would have been a more expensive proposition for Arsenal overall.

Barcelona: Aubameyang’s contract runs until 2025

In terms of sport, the striker no longer played a role in coach Mikel Arteta’s team after a number of disciplinary misconduct. Aubameyang had already had to give up his captain’s armband and he didn’t make it into the matchday squad before he left for the Africa Cup a few weeks ago.

At Barca, the former Dortmund player signed a contract that runs until 2025. However, this includes the option to end it early in 2023.
