“Barbie” in the cinema: is it worth it? – Culture

How does Barbie get out of her Barbieland and into the real world? She gets into her pink convertible, then her pink boat, then her pink snowmobile, then her pink bike and finally her space rocket. Eventually she gets on rollerblades in Venice Beach, where the real people who usually play with her live. A child would not narrate a Barbie’s journey through their nursery any differently. It wouldn’t wonder if Barbieland is another land, alien universe, or fantasy place. Because Greta Gerwig’s film is also about playing, it’s the same thing there. A doll turns out because she has something to clarify with the people. Not only do they play with her affectionately, they also celebrate Barbie as a new feminist icon or, like Gloria Steinem once did, declare her to be the epitome of “just about everything that the feminist movement wanted to escape from”.
