This is one of the key measures of his mandate. Bruno Bernard, president of the metropolis of Lyon, has just announced, in an interview with The Tribune of Lyon, postpone by two years, from 2026 to 2028, the ban on driving in the Low Emission Zone (ZFE) for “Crit’Air” 2 vehicles. This sticker concerns all diesel cars and petrol cars from before 2011, i.e. 70% of household cars.
With the revision of the calendar, the president of the metropolis wishes to give more time to the people concerned to renew their vehicle and improve the public transport network.
The extension of the perimeter of the ZFE also questioned
The elected official also declared that he had thought about extending the perimeter of the ZFE, which concerned about twenty municipalities. “Either we directly put a wider scope, in a schedule to be discussed, or we start with the one that was planned and we expand it over time,” he explains. This decision will be voted on at the Metropolitan Council in June. Currently, the perimeter includes all the districts of Lyon, Villeurbanne, Caluire and Bron in part.
This announcement comes as the Lyon region has been in a major air pollution peak for a week.
