Good Friday is a nationwide holiday.
But for Christians, Good Friday has little to do with celebration.
Because on the “Silent Holiday” Jesus was nailed to the cross.
Dancing is banned in many federal states, sometimes until Holy Saturday.
Each federal state can circumvent the dance ban with special permits.
Violations can result in fines of up to €1,500.
Some Christians abstain from meat and alcohol on Good Friday.
Minutes of silence at the hour of Jesus’ death at 3 p.m. are also a tradition.
By the way: Good Friday has no longer been a public holiday in Austria since 2019.
