Liberals oppose sweeping restrictions on advertising of unhealthy foods. Now a broad alliance of doctors, consumer advocates, parents and educators accuses the party of torpedoing the health protection of children.
In an open letter, 61 organizations from the fields of science, consumer protection and child protection appealed to the FDP leadership to support the planned ban on advertising unhealthy children’s food. With its rejection, the party is “going against the unanimous consensus in science and among professional organizations,” says the letter Süddeutsche Zeitung was available in advance. This means “a clear rejection of the health protection of children and young people”. The signatories include the AOK Federal Association, the Professional Association of Paediatricians, the German Diabetes Society, the German Cancer Research Center and the German Children’s Fund.
