At the edge of a ballet premiere last Saturday, there was a scandal at the Hanover State Opera. The dance director and winner of the German Dance Prize 2022 Marco Goecke has the dance critic of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung attacked with dog feces during the break. The house regretted the incident, director Laura Berman said in a press release that immediately after the event “contact was sought with the journalist” and “apologized to her personally and also publicly.” The background to the conflict, which escalated within minutes, are negative reviews of his choreographies, which Goecke apparently no longer wanted to accept from the critic. The directorship announced that it would examine labor law steps against the ballet director, advise them together and then act “in this internal personnel matter”. According to Berman, the State Opera is an “open place of respectful cooperation”. The critic has filed a criminal complaint.
