US actor Alec Baldwin shot and killed a camerawoman while filming the film “Rust”. Now the weapons master responsible has to go to prison for a year and a half. She had not carefully supervised the weapons, according to the verdict.

In the case of Hollywood star Alec Baldwin’s fatal shooting of a camerawoman during a western filming, gun master Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer in the US state of New Mexico gave the 27-year-old the highest possible sentence. “You were the weapon master, the one who stood between a safe weapon and one that could kill someone. You alone turned a safe weapon into a deadly one.”

Negligent homicide

While filming the film “Rust” in October 2021, camerawoman Halyna Hutchins was fatally hit by a live bullet from a .45 Colt that Baldwin was holding in his hand. Director Joel Souza was injured by the same bullet. “Without you, Miss Hutchins would be alive. A husband would have his partner and a little boy would have his mother,” the judge continued, addressing Gutierrez-Reed.

The weapons master was found guilty of negligent homicide by a jury at the beginning of March. According to prosecutors, Gutierrez-Reed had sloppy oversight of the more than 20 weapons on set. It is unclear how the live ammunition even got into the revolver. Because of the incident, Baldwin is also charged with negligent homicide in a separate and ongoing case.
