Baerbock on the Ukraine conflict: “The situation is precarious”

Status: 02/13/2022 9:50 p.m

There are currently plenty of diplomatic talks on the Ukraine conflict, and yet the situation has not defused. Foreign Minister Baerbock is still counting on it. The situation is “precarious,” she said in the daily topics.

For Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, diplomacy remains the key to solving the NATO-Russia conflict. She did that in an interview with the daily topics clear. You have to “talk together about how we ensure security in Europe, within the framework of the NATO-Russia Council, but also within the framework of the Normandy format, where Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany sit together at the table,” explained Baerbock .

In order for Russian President Vladimir Putin to get out of this conflict face-saving, security in Europe must be discussed together, Baerbock continued: “How we can take further disarmament steps on both sides, how we can have more transparency in our relations – including in military exercises, that is the way now,” she explained.

“Insanely big consequences for Russia”

There are currently no signs that a military conflict is “a matter that has already been decided,” said Baerbock. But the situation is “precarious”: “That’s why we and our partners have once again made it clear that any further military action would have incredibly serious consequences and consequences for Russia.” The Foreign Minister mentioned economic consequences, but also consequences for other forms of cooperation.

It is now important to show that Germany is “on the side of Ukraine”. And it must also be made clear to the neighbors: “We stand by your side”. You have to show that nothing fits between them – not even between the western partners.
