It’s a moving moment. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock visits the Holocaust memorial at Yad Vashem, which commemorates the six million Jews murdered by Nazi Germany. At the start of her three-day visit to the Middle East, Baerbock commemorated the victims of National Socialism with tears in her eyes. She called for a determined fight against anti-Semitism. “It is our absolute obligation, especially as a younger generation, to keep the memory alive, especially when there are fewer and fewer eyewitnesses among us,” she said, clearly touched.

“It is our responsibility to raise our voice against anti-Semitism, against hate and hate speech, against exclusion and violence, so that such a crime against humanity is never repeated. So that the children of this earth all have a future,” said Baerbock, who has two children herself has.

Before meeting the Palestinian leadership, Baerbock met with representatives of the Independent Commission on Human Rights (ICHR). With regard to the peace process, the minister explained that Jordan and Egypt, as direct neighbors and Israel’s oldest peace treaty partners, play a special role. She wanted to explore how steps towards a peace process could be jointly supported.
