Baerbock in the ARD summer interview: “We have to work that up”

It doesn’t look so rosy for Annalena Baerbock. According to the polls, they only want twelve percent to be chancellor. It lies behind Armin Laschet (CDU) and Olaf Scholz (SPD). The Green candidate knows that. And she also knows that she made mistakes. “Yes, there were setbacks in the candidacy as well,” she said in the ARD summer interview with a view to late-reported earnings or inaccuracies in their résumé. But for her it is about learning from these mistakes and not burying her head in the sand.

She stands by her candidacy for chancellor and is aware that there are many tasks to be mastered in this country. In the interview, Baerbock emphasized several times that it was important to her to act together – together in her party, but also “together with the many people” in Germany. Five weeks before the federal election, Baerbock is combative, wants to “go out to promote trust”, wants to talk to people, as a candidate for chancellor, as a Green politician, as a woman and as a mother. It is about renewing the country.

U Committee on Afghanistan

Baerbock found clear words about the current Afghanistan crisis. “We have to come to terms with that,” she said in a passage about the chaos surrounding the evacuation of foreign citizens and local employees of foreign troops and organizations from Kabul and called for a committee of inquiry. The committee must come, regardless of who heads the next federal government. “We can’t just keep quiet about what happened in the disaster,” emphasized Baerbock.

With regard to the ongoing evacuation operation, Baerbock said that “this great humanitarian disaster will not be brought under control” if the US does not make it clear: “You will remain on site as long as people have to be rescued.” It is foreseeable that there will only be a few days left for further rescue flights. The US actually wants to complete the withdrawal of its troops by August 31st. A continuation of the evacuation operation without the USA is excluded.

Baerbock also called on the German government to invite other states to an Afghanistan conference. China, Russia and neighboring countries of Afghanistan would have to take part in order to clarify where people could be brought to safety who now feared for their entire family. She assumes that well over 50,000 people would have to be brought to Germany – including family members of local staff, journalists and human rights activists.

9,000 euros e-car bonus

Baerbock made it clear that her party’s goal was still to lead the next government. Climate protection is one of the most important election campaign issues. Baerbock emphasized that in the party’s election manifesto, above all, the short-term goals were named, such as the expansion of renewable energies and the phase-out of coal. “It’s about doing now.” And the question is: “Carry on as before or are we now setting the course to change that?” Climate protection must be pushed, so Baerbock.

The Greens therefore want to increase the price of CO2 cent by cent over the next few years. But they also want to keep an eye on social justice. In this context, Baerbock mentioned a higher minimum wage of twelve euros and a higher premium for e-cars. This should increase from now 6,000 euros to 9,000 euros in the future and also apply to the purchase of a used electric car.
