Baby Shark: YouTube video breaks the 10 billion mark

For the first time, a YouTube video has reached more than ten billion views. First of all, this is good news for the maker, who earns a lot of money from it, and for the video portal, which earns even more money from it.

But it’s also kind of good news for humanity, considering that this most-watched flick isn’t about a rapper with half-naked dancers, a shoot-out stream, or a flailing conspiracy monger. Instead of false information, sexism or hate, the text contains a lot of “Doo doo doo doo doo doo”. It’s the video “Baby Shark Song”, a children’s song released in 2016, in which singing children dance in a colorful, animated underwater world.

The fact that the catchy song is so incredibly successful may be due to the fact that it is in English and can be understood in many countries. Or that Washington Nationals baseball player Gerardo Parra, the nursery rhyme made his entrance music and the dance became fan choreography. Or how the song became a political protest song in the Middle East in 2019 after Lebanese protesters performed the baby shark dance in front of a toddler to calm her down during a protest. The video of it went viral.

But it is more likely that a lot of children in this world are very assertive when it comes to the choice of music in the family. And children are known to tirelessly listen to songs “Nochmaaaal”. Five more children’s songs are among the ten most-clicked YouTube videos worldwide.
