The B 16 is one of the most important federal highways in Bavaria. Ten years ago, then Prime Minister Horst Seehofer promised to expand the route in Upper Bavaria to be “motorway-like”. Does the project still fit in with the times?
On a sunny Friday morning in March, Margaretha Bauernfeind stands on a bridge near Manching and frowns. Below it lies the B 16, one of the longest and most important federal highways in Bavaria. The 340 kilometer long asphalt strip lies like a belt around the middle of the country. “Look how much is going on here,” says Bauernfeind. She means this ironically. The two-lane road down there is relatively empty, with large gaps opening up between the cars and trucks driving by.
