Sun sails for the stroller: These models increase UV protection
Instead of covering the stroller with a towel, an awning with UV protection is a better alternative

Every stroller has a sun canopy, which acts as a glare and privacy screen, but is also intended to protect baby’s sensitive skin from dangerous UV rays. However, the area is so small that additional sun protection – such as an awning – cannot hurt on hot days.
Investing in an awning can make sense to cover the open area of the stroller and protect your baby from dangerous UV radiation. In contrast to a parasol, it provides more shade and thus automatically reduces the risk of sunburn. It is easily attached to the stroller and can be removed again at any time. Depending on the manufacturer, the common models differ in colour, pattern – and size. For this reason, you should think about the following points before purchasing.

Most sun sail are usually so flexible that they fit over any stroller. Nevertheless, you should pay attention to the dimensions given by the manufacturer in advance. Because even if the models should be universally applicable, it can still happen that you get a number that is too small or too large. Unless you opt for a bespoke shade sail from the same brand as your stroller. Otherwise you can choose between different models:
- Sun sails that are attached to the baby seat (or buggy attachment) and the handles with a rubber band or cord.
- Awning, like a kind of canopy on the baby seat attached, but not to the stroller handles.
- Sun sails, which are simply intended to extend the fold-out sun canopy on the stroller.
- Awning that also have one side protection offer and also have an integrated skylight.
Buying sun sails: you need to pay attention to this
In order for a sun sail to protect the delicate baby skin from dangerous sun rays, it should have a high level of UV protection – that means: at least SPF 50+. Most models even show this value, but not every one has been tested according to the UV Standard 801. This is a testing and certification system that tests sun sails under realistic conditions and can thus measure the actual UV protection factor. In addition, there are also a few models that have a SPF 80 have, but are also noticeably more expensive to buy.
Depending on which model you choose, that will sun sail attached to the handles and the baby seat – or just to the baby seat. Attachment is very easy with an elastic band, but the advantage of the cords is that the sun protection can be easily pushed back and forth (if required). This allows you to make eye contact with your child at all times and ensure healthy air circulation if too much heat builds up under the sail. It is important to know that an awning can never replace applying sunscreen, it only serves as additional protection from the sun.
Security note: If you attach an awning to the stroller, warm air can accumulate underneath, especially on hot days. To ensure that your child does not overheat, you must ensure regular air exchange by removing the awning from time to time.
