The New York Film Critics Association NYFCC has named a music drama with Cate Blanchett by director Todd Field as the best film of the year. Does this also improve the chances of an Oscar?

The drama “Tàr” has received further awards in the USA and thus increased its chances in the current trophy competition. The New York film critics’ association NYFCC (New York Film Critics Circle) voted director Todd Field’s music drama best film of the year.

In addition, the leading actress Cate Blanchett was voted best actress. In “Tàr” she embodies the fictional chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, whose life is spiraling out of control. Irish actor Colin Farrell took home the leading actor award for “After Yang” and “The Banshees of Inisherin.” The winners were announced on Friday (local time).

The trophies from the NYFCC Critics Association, founded in 1935, are among the first of the many film award ceremonies to be presented in the coming months. The winners are often among the candidates for the Oscars, which take place in March. Last year, for example, the critics’ association named “Drive My Car” the best film. The Japanese drama Ryusuke Hamaguchi was later nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, and ultimately won Best International Feature Film.
