Putin critic Kasparov receives “media freedom prize”

The former world chess champion will be able to accept the award in May. Previous winners include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Russian government critic and former world chess champion Garry Kasparov will receive the “Freedom Prize of the Media” this year. The award is dedicated to the “brave democratic opposition in Russia” and is presented to Kasparov “for all people who stand up for a future of Russia in peace, freedom and democracy and often risk their lives in the process,” said the Weimer Media Group (WMG ) with.
The prize will be awarded on May 4th at the Ludwig Erhard Summit in Gmund am Tegernsee, organized by the Weimer Media Group. Kasparow is also supposed to be there then.
“Kasparov is one of the most prominent opposition activists in Russia, who is risking his life with his courageous commitment to peace and democracy,” the jury said. The commitment of Kasparow, his organizations and companions warns: “Individual freedom, democracy and prosperity are not to be taken for granted. The free and peaceful achievements of the past decades are at stake.”
Volodymyr Zelenskyj was also a laureate
The prize is being awarded for the ninth time this year. It is intended to honor public figures who are particularly committed to freedom of expression, social interaction, political dialogue and democracy. Previous winners include Austria’s ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, Mikhail Gorbachev, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Christian Lindner, Jens Weidmann, Jean-Claude Juncker and Prince Albert II of Monaco. Last year it went to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and Russian journalist Marina Ovsyannikova.
The Ludwig Erhard summit will take place on May 3rd and 4th at Tegernsee. Federal Minister of Finance and FDP leader Lindner, SPD leader Lars Klingbeil, Green Party leader Ricarda Lang, CDU leader Friedrich Merz and Austria’s Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg are expected to attend. The CEO of Fresenius, Michael Sen, Audi boss Markus Duesmann, Meta Europe boss Angelika Gifford and Deutsche Bank boss Christian Sewing come from the economy.
