MTV wants to award trophies to outstanding artists again in November – in attendance. Last year, this was only possible virtually due to Corona.

After a virtual party in 2020 in the Corona crisis, the music channel MTV is celebrating the Europe Music Awards (EMA) in real life again in 2021 and has chosen Hungary for it.

The awarding of the EMA trophies will be broadcast live from the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna on November 14th. “After a long break without a big EMA show, I am all the more pleased that we land with the EMAs in Budapest, where we will certainly experience an extraordinary evening that will cause a stir around the world,” said Raffaele Annecchino, President and managing director of ViacomCBS Networks International, according to a statement on Tuesday. MTV will announce information about the nominees and details of the voting.

Hungary’s government has repeatedly come under massive international criticism for its dealings with non-heterosexual people. The President and CEO of MTV Entertainment Group Worldwide, Chris McCarthy, apparently alluding to it, said it would be “a great honor for him to be in solidarity with my LGBTQ + siblings as we celebrate the MTV EMAs 2021 from Hungary”.

The MTV Europe Music Awards have been presented annually since 1994. Fans can vote for their favorites online. Last year, the music gala was still held virtually due to Corona, performances by artists were recorded at various locations around the world and broadcast live.
